The El Cortez is a great pick for a cheap hotel Las Vegas. When money is tight but you still need to get away from it all the El Cortez is your best bet.
El Cortez Hotel & Casino
It’s not the newest. It’s not the coolest. It is one of the CHEAPEST……Free (you get credit in dining and play that equal the cost of the room) if you plan right. Check our list of Hotel Packages Downtown or go directly to the El Cortez website for details. You can’t beat free.
If you’re going to do one of the packages I’d go for the best room possible. If the dates you need don’t work out for the package, the cheapest room will still be clean, comfortable and have all the basics. It’s just older and has some signs of wear that are no big deal. Unfortunately they do not have a pool.
If money is tight, the cost of the room isn’t your only challenge. You need an inexpensive place to try your luck as well and the El Cortez is perfect. Lots of penny slot machines, $3 Black Jack, 25 cent Roulette and they have a full race and sports book. I remember many years ago when my Mom brought me to the El Cortez and taught me how to play Roulette. Back then it was 10 cents chips. I bought $20 worth of chips and looked like a High Roller!! Good place to learn. For gaming action that lets you hold on to your money a little longer (it can go awfully fast in the slot machines) try Keno or go to the Race and Sports Book and bet on some horse races or sporting events. Grab a cocktail and a seat and watch the action on the big screens. If you’re not sure how to place the bets……ask. They’ll be happy to help you.
If you do one of the packages, a dining credit is included so make the most of it. Go to the Flame Steakhouse. They have live entertainment (piano), nice atmosphere and a wine list that is VERY economical. It has some of the best prices I’ve seen in Vegas.
Besides the cost, another bonus to staying at the El Cortez is that you are in a location (Downtown) that also has numerous inexpensive things to do, places to eat and cheap places to party all within walking distance. Check out the Fremont Street Experience, kill a couple hours at the Mob Museum, First Friday Art Festival(on the first Friday of every month), ride the Zipline, eat at Le Thai, grab 2 slices and a soda at Piccadilly Pizza for $5.99, check out the multitude of street performers, be entertained at Don’t Tell Mama or Insert Coin. Put together your own pub crawl and cocktail at the Griffin, Beauty Bar, Downtown Bar, Mob Bar, Hennessey’s Tavern or Hogs & Heifers to name a few. For everything there is to do Downtown read our guide here.
