Find some unusual things to do in Las Vegas and break away from the pack. Checking out the history of porn is a great place to start.
The Erotic Heritage Museum
Most people’s check list of things to do in Las Vegas goes something like this: Bellagio Fountains, Eiffel Tower, Stratosphere Observation Deck, Cirque du Soleil Show and at least one Elvis impersonator. Ho hum. Shake things up a bit and visit Sin City’s own Erotic Heritage Museum located at 3275 Industrial Road Las Vegas, 89109 right in the heart of “Strip Club Row.” Open Sunday & Tuesday – Thursday 11am – 4pm. Friday & Saturday noon - 10pm. Closed Mondays. Adults (18+): $15 Students, Seniors and Military (with valid ID) $10. 702-369-6442.
Honestly, I didn’t even know this place existed until I began this blog and started doing more in-depth research on all the amazing things there are to do in Las Vegas. Recently, I came across a special discount offer on groupons.com (we love groupons, great deals on everything) for the Erotic Heritage Museum and couldn’t pass up the chance to check it out.
We met Dorian Gomez, the Erotic Heritage Museum’s resident curator, who was very welcoming, helpful and had a plethora of knowledge about every aspect of the museum. If you have any questions, she’s the woman to ask. She’s awesome.
The Erotic Heritage Museum tops the list of unusual things to do in Las Vegas. It’s highbrow intellectual and lowbrow makes you want to blush and giggle all wrapped into one experience. There’s a humorous side; the first thing you encounter upon entrance to the museum is two mannequins dressed like flashers with rain coats open and penises exposed. There’s the artsy-fartsy aspect; prints of a naked Yoko and John Lennon by John Lennon, a risqué Picasso print and a giant sculpture of the male genitalia crafted entirely out of pennies. There’s also a lot of education to be had. I learned all the porn industry terms including what a “fluffer” is. Did you know that the first pornographic movie (you can view it at the museum) dates back to 1915? Of course it does. As soon as the movie camera was invented some guy said, “Hey, you know what else we could film…” (probably a relative of Ron Jeremy). Other classic porn films; Behind the Green Door and Deep Throat are on display as well. Did you know peep shows date back hundreds of years? The early ones were ornate boxes with a women inside that could be carried from place to place (I guess that would make it a traveling peep show). There are also jaw dropping plaster casts of some of the porn industry’s most famous body parts including John Holmes’ penis. And you thought it looked big on the screen….yikes!
Numerous amendments are on display for a historical account of how our society has evolved in the matter of human sexuality
and freedom of speech over the last 100 years. UNLV does tours for its students that are taking Human Sexuality or Anthropology courses. You can read about some of the porn industry’s most influential players ie. Ron Jeremy and Larry Flynt. I was surprised to learn how Larry Flynt literally became a millionaire over night.
There will never be a shortage of things to do in Las Vegas. Our visit to the Erotic Heritage Museum was a great experience and I would recommend you add it to your top ten things to do in Las Vegas. It’s interesting, educational, fun and definitely a change from the ordinary. For more ideas of great things to do in Las Vegas check out 101 Things to do in Las Vegas on the home page.
